Run-length and manufacturer assumptions

The editable example uses 3.048 m (10 ft) runs unless a shorter run is stated. Metric overviews round these to 3 m. Adapt the parts and lengths to your installation before choosing cable and protection.

Show sizes in AWG

Supporting parts

  1. 6.1 m total of 1.5 mm² (16 AWG) marine cable
  2. Terminations for 1.5 mm² cable, matched to the equipment's screw terminals, leads or studs
  3. 7.5 A fuse and holder on the positive run
  4. Heat-shrink, strain relief and terminal boots sized to the cable

Check stud sizes, fuse type, run length and how warm the space gets against the gear you actually have before you order.

Which RNG-100D-SS does this represent?

This entry represents the 18.6 V Vmp / 22.3 V Voc version. Renogy's manufacturer datasheet archived by Lowe's matches the catalog's 100 W and 5.38 A operating current. It specifies 33 cells, 1076 × 509 × 35 mm, a 6.5 kg panel and 14 AWG output leads, 2 ft long.

Check the label before combining panels. Renogy's Version 3 datasheet uses the same RNG-100D-SS name but lists 20.4 V Vmp, 24.3 V Voc and 4.91 A Imp. Those values describe a different version; this catalog entry retains the earlier specifications.

What limits the array and its protection?

The matching legacy datasheet gives 5.86 A short-circuit current and a 15 A maximum series fuse rating. The latter is a ceiling on module protection, not a recommendation to put a 15 A fuse on every installation. The connector's separate 30 A rating does not raise that ceiling. Check the actual string layout, cable rating and controller instructions when choosing protection.

The panel's Voc temperature coefficient is −0.28%/°C. Its 22.3 V rating is measured at 25 °C cell temperature; cold conditions increase Voc. Calculate the cold-weather voltage of the complete series string before comparing it with the controller's PV limit. The panel's 600 V maximum system rating is not the controller's allowed input voltage.

How should it be connected and mounted?

Use a solar charge controller between the panel and battery. Renogy's installation manual, section 2.2.3 connects the battery to the controller first, then PV, and sets charging parameters for the battery.

Sections 1.3.4, 1.5 and 2.1.2 call for outdoor PV cable, clean and fully engaged connectors, covering the panel before work, and avoiding disconnection under load. Use the existing frame mounting holes and fasteners secured against vehicle vibration. Match the extension cable connectors to the actual fitted connectors; the legacy datasheet calls them “Solar Connectors” without identifying a connector manufacturer.
