Run-length and manufacturer assumptions
The editable example uses 3.048 m (10 ft) runs unless a shorter run is stated. Metric overviews round these to 3 m. Adapt the parts and lengths to your installation before choosing cable and protection.
Supporting parts
- 6.1 m total of 35 mm² (2 AWG) marine cable
- Terminations for 35 mm² cable, matched to the equipment's screw terminals, leads or studs
- 150 A fuse and holder on the positive run
- Heat-shrink, strain relief and terminal boots sized to the cable
Check stud sizes, fuse type, run length and how warm the space gets against the gear you actually have before you order.

Which Phoenix generation is covered?
These notes cover the legacy Phoenix/Inverter 12/1200 VE.Direct described in Victron's July 2024 manual. Its model specification table rates 1200 VA, with 1000 W continuous at 25°C, 900 W at 40°C, and 2200 W peak. The catalog's continuous rating therefore matches this older generation. Newer HW15 products have different power ratings; do not transfer their figures or terminal torques to this unit without matching the part number.
The 12/ prefix means nominal 12 V DC input. AC versions have different sockets and nameplates; confirm whether the installed inverter supplies 230 V or 120 V. The generic catalog record does not identify a complete hardware/AC suffix, so this remains family-qualified.
What connections are represented?
DC + / DC − are the battery input. AC L / AC N represent the output socket conductors, not a shore-power input. The Chassis PE port represents the required external Class I protective-earth lug. Preserve the output socket's earth connection as well. Its 150 A catalog limit is a planning envelope copied from the existing DC terminals, not a manufacturer earth-lug ampacity. The remote on/off connector and VE.Direct port remain omitted.
Appendix B specifies an earth conductor at least half the battery-cable cross-section, using its tabulated conductor sizes; the earth lug accepts at most 25 mm². This protective conductor is separate from the normal DC return.
Neutral-to-earth bonding depends on the outlet version and installation. The manual says standard units have an isolated/floating output, while GFCI versions are bonded internally. Have that arrangement checked before relying on an RCD/GFCI; do not assume the drawn N is already earth-referenced. Never connect the inverter output directly to another energized AC source. A shore/inverter installation requires suitable transfer equipment.
What DC cable and protection are specified?
The battery table, printed page 4, gives 25 mm² for 0–1.5 m and 35 mm² for 1.5–3 m on the 12/1200, with 150 Ah minimum battery capacity as its guideline. Actual battery discharge capability and BMS limits must also support startup demand. The model's terminal capacity is 35 mm²; this legacy manual establishes no numeric tightening torque.
The listed 200 A BF1 internal fuse is distinct from battery-cable protection. The manual requires an additional fuse/breaker near the battery for cables beyond 1.5 m, and for UL NEMA-GFCI versions at every cable length. Select battery-side protection with the installed conductor and applicable installation requirements; do not present the internal fuse as a universally specified external rating.
Which operating settings matter?
Configure low-voltage shutdown/restart and ECO mode through VE.Direct. Bluetooth requires the separate VE.Direct Bluetooth Smart dongle on this generation. Default ECO wake-up is 15 W, checked every 2.5 seconds; small electronics may fail to remain powered in ECO. Normal no-load consumption is about 8 W for the 12 V model, versus 1 W in default ECO.
Where should it be installed?
Use a dry, ventilated IP21 location with 100 mm clearance around the unit. Follow the mounting-orientation drawings and keep ventilation openings unobstructed. Check battery polarity before energizing, then test the intended load and shutdown behavior. Heat, cable voltage drop and motor starting surges can reduce usable capacity below the headline wattage.
