Cable sizing for this example
Use the diagram as a starting point for your installation. Replace the example equipment and cable lengths with your own, and check the connections against your exact model's instructions.
3 m one way
12 V system
- Wire
- 16 mm² · 6 AWG
- Example fuse
- 70 A
- Design current
- 50 A
- Voltage drop
- 2.8%
Sized against ABYC E-11. The design current is the part's continuous draw. The length is one way; voltage drop includes an equal-length return.
Run-length and manufacturer assumptions
The editable example uses 3.048 m (10 ft) runs unless a shorter run is stated. Metric overviews round these to 3 m. Adapt the parts and lengths to your installation before choosing cable and protection.
Supporting parts
- 6.1 m total of 16 mm² (6 AWG) marine cable
- Terminations for 16 mm² cable, matched to the equipment's screw terminals, leads or studs
- 70 A fuse and holder on the positive run
- Heat-shrink, strain relief and terminal boots sized to the cable
Check stud sizes, fuse type, run length and how warm the space gets against the gear you actually have before you order.

Identify the Pro-Series 1000
The catalog photo and 700 W/454 kg specifications match the horizontal Pro-Series 1000 family, rather than a vertical V-series windlass. The current Lewmar product page confirms that family and pulling capacity. Read the actual nameplate and gypsy designation before ordering control parts or a rode: “1000” alone is not an installation identifier.
The downloaded manufacturer manual is preserved by Seatronic. Page 2 lists 12 V supply, 50 A normal current, a 70 A breaker and 114 kg working-load limit for the 1000. Maximum pull is 454 kg; it is not the allowable load to hold indefinitely.
Wire through the reversing controls
Page 6 specifies the 70 A breaker, part 68000240, near the battery in a dry accessible location. Pages 7–9 provide different diagrams for the supplied contactor and optional control boxes. Match the diagram to the installed hardware, including the 3 A control fuse where drawn. The two canvas pins summarize this whole supply circuit; do not connect a small rocker switch directly in the motor-current path.
A Pro-Fish conversion changes free-fall operation and some service parts. Do not assume the Pro-Series clutch procedure applies unchanged after conversion.
Account for cable length and voltage drop
Use the model 1000 cable chart on page 6 with the complete battery-to-windlass-and-return route. It provides conductor sizes for several length bands and limits full-run voltage drop to 10%. Check the chosen conductor's ampacity and actual loaded voltage as well. The catalog's 150 A surge is a planning allowance, not a measured or guaranteed manufacturer peak.
Provide chain fall and independent restraint
Section 4 requires a clear vertical rode fall of at least 300 mm and describes deck reinforcement and gypsy alignment. Match chain pitch and rope construction to the fitted gypsy; a nominal chain diameter alone does not establish compatibility.
Use an independent strong point to hold the rode and secure the anchor while travelling. Isolate the breaker before clearing the gypsy or servicing it. Inspect the rode, mounting fasteners and electrical joints periodically, and follow the manual's clutch and emergency-recovery procedures for the actual Pro-Series/Pro-Fish variant.
