Identify the lithium starting battery
The SSB LS86C is a 12.8 V, 120 Ah LiFePO4 starting battery with an internal BMS. These notes use the exact-model Issue 4/2024 specification, PDF page 1. A matching full installation manual was not found in SSB's public downloads. The specification supports identifying the battery and its published limits; it does not establish compatibility with every engine or alternator.
Keep cranking figures out of continuous sizing
SSB lists 2000 A CCA at −18°C for 15 seconds, up to 2200 A instantaneous discharge for five seconds, and up to 360 A constant discharge for 20 minutes. Each carries a duration. None establishes an unrestricted 2000 A continuous rating.
Crimp therefore leaves the maximum continuous-discharge field unset. Where the planner needs a battery headroom estimate, its generic LiFePO4 fallback is 1C, or 120 A here. This is a software planning assumption, not an SSB rating or a starting-circuit calculation. The existing terminal allowances likewise do not verify the engine's cranking cable, voltage drop or connector capacity. Use the actual starter requirement and duration for that design.
Confirm charging and alternator behavior
The sheet recommends 36–120 A charging and lists 360 A maximum constant charging. Crimp's 100 A charging value lies within the recommended range. The 15.6 V overcharge protection and 15.2 V recovery are BMS thresholds, not charger setpoints. Normal charge voltage and float settings are missing from the retrieved sheet.
Before connecting an alternator, confirm SSB's instructions for the regulator and any BMS interruption of the charging path. A description of conventional charging compatibility does not specify how a particular alternator handles abrupt battery disconnection.
Address temperature and bank limits
The specification explicitly says no low-temperature protection. Its broad “adaptive temperature” range is not a separate validated cold-charging profile. Obtain permissible cell charging temperatures before cold-weather use; do not rely on the BMS to block it.
The published maxima are two units in series and four in parallel. The drawing requires terminal adapters for the illustrated polarity arrangement. The sheet does not provide adapter torque, fuse selection or complete bank installation instructions. Confirm those against the actual battery hardware and engine installation before assembly. See dimensions and issue marking, PDF page 2.
