Match D34 rather than a similarly named case
This is YellowTop D34, part 8012-021, a 12 V, 55 Ah dual-purpose AGM with SAE/BCI automotive posts. The archived manufacturer sheet identifies a Group 34 case and approximately 254 × 174.6 × 198.4 mm, including terminal height. D34/78 and D34M use different terminal arrangements. See OPTIMA's August 2004 model sheet, page 1, preserved by an independent technical archive.
The document is useful exact-model evidence, but is an older edition. Confirm the supplied unit's label and current charging instructions before applying its more aggressive specialist recharge procedures.
Interpret capacity and cranking ratings
The battery is rated 55 Ah at C/20, 750 A CCA at 0°F, and 870 A MCA at 32°F. Its reserve-capacity test is 120 minutes at 25 A, ending at 10.5 V under the specified conditions. These are distinct tests; 750 A CCA is not a continuous house-load or terminal ampacity rating.
Crimp retains 60 A discharge as a planning allowance and 10 A charging from the conventional constant-voltage charger recommendation. Neither establishes the battery's universal maximum current. Size cabling and protection for the actual duty, including starting loads if the battery serves an engine.
Install the posts and enclosure
Use clamps designed for the SAE automotive posts, with secure cable strain relief and protected positive connections. The sheet does not specify clamp torque; follow the clamp and battery hardware instructions. Secure the case in an appropriate tray and provide ventilation. The manufacturer warns that overcharge can vent flammable gas and permanently lose water from this sealed battery.
Provide a disconnect and suitable protection for house circuits. Do not infer that a cranking-current label permits a large unfused auxiliary cable.
Select the appropriate charging method
The charging table, page 2, recommends a conventional regulated charger at 13.8–15.0 V, maximum 10 A, and float at 13.2–13.8 V, maximum 1 A. These recommendations assume 25°C. The document also describes separate rapid and cyclic recharge procedures with temperature and finish-current conditions; those are not interchangeable with unattended float charging.
Monitor temperature, avoid overcharging, and return the battery to full charge after cycling. For a modern charger, choose a manufacturer-approved AGM profile that matches the actual D34 revision rather than copying the highest voltage from the archived table. Series or parallel house banks require matched units and a separate balanced-wiring and protection design.
